DMG codes - Explanations

DMG Codes

Don’t you ever wonder what the code displayed on our DMG cartridge mean ? I mean DMG-AK2P-EUR, DMG-AGEE-USA, … what language is that ? Were the marketing guy at Nintendo drunk when they defined the label design ? Not at all, here is the key for you to understand your cartridge.

First of all, let's see what appears on the cartridge, with a common Spanish example :

1 - DMG : No worries about this, all classic GB games own this code (Dot Matrix Game). This means this cartridge can be played on a classic game boy. And if we talk about the devil (Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance) , for the GameBoy color, we'll get a CGB (Colored Game Boy), and a AGB (Advanced Game Boy) for the Game boy Advance.

2 - ML : This is the code that identifies the game itself. In this case, we have a ML for "Mario Land". This 2nd code can be of 2 or 4 letters, depending if the game was released in the early days, or later. And for the 4 letters code, codes finishing with a E are from Northern AmErica, and codes finishing with a P are from EuroPe and Australia.

3- ESP : This is the area where the game was distributed. ESP means "ESPaña" (Spain) . See below for further details. Let’s have a zoom on the existing aera codes (part 3 of the code displayed on the cartridge) :

ASI : Asia (Taiwan, ...)

AUS : Australia

CAN : Canada

CHN : China

ESP : Spain (España)

EUR : Europe and Australia

FAH : France And Holland

FRA : France and sometimes Belgium

FRG : Federal ???? Germany (Austria, Switzerland, Germany)

GPS : Game Package Software (distribution for other little countries with no code)

HOL : Netherlands and sometimes Belgium

ITA : Italia

JAP : Japan

NOE : Nintendo of Europe (Germany)

SCN : Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland)

UKV : United Kingdom

USA : USA & sometimes Mexico

4 - "1" : This is an incrementation number. During the lifetime of a game, changes needed to be made to the packing of the game (a change in distribution process, modification of the text on the box, and even smaller things as modification of the contact address or phone number ?, ...), even if the game itself did not change. In these cases, so as to track the difference of versions of the packing, Nintendo used the incrementation number. But Beware ! Sometimes, You can have a box with "-2" and a cartridge with no incrementation. Well, that would be too easy if everything was logical ! And please note that in Europe, when there were several reeditions, they printed EUR instead of FAH-3 or NOE-4.

Who said that it would be easy to build this database ?? !!!!!
