After the events that take place during The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, Link decides to travel to unknown lands, in order to train himself to face other threats. However, a storm destroys his boat while he is at sea on his way back to Hyrule, and he is shipwrecked on the island of Cocolint. Tarkin and his daughter Marine, from the seagull village, take Link in and take care of him. They teach him that no land exists beyond the seas bordering the island. Link retrieves his sword, then a mysterious owl reveals to him that he must wake up the island's guardian called Dreamfish, in order to return home. The Dreamfish is locked and asleep in the Sacred Egg, a giant egg located on the summit of Mount Tamaranch, and can only be awakened by the mermaids' eight musical instruments.
