What about the ESP area ?
ESP (for ESPaña) designates the code used for distribution in Spain.
For this location, some games have the particularity of having a numbering that starts at ESP-1. There are two theories to explain it. The first evokes a trade war between Spaco and Erbe, the two historic Spanish distributors. Spaco was supposed to have exclusive distribution rights at the launch of the Gameboy but Erbe walked past at the last moment. A first production of Spaco cartridges could have been launched and therefore destroyed because of the takeover by Erbe. The other theory is that Erbe's main warehouse burned down at the time, taking with it all the games stored inside and therefore potentially all early versions of ESP games.
ESP games have been imported into European countries quite a bit, it is not uncommon to come across them in France or Italy for example. The reverse is also true and Spain had a method of its own for selling some of these foreign games on its territory: it resticked an ESP label on top of the original label.
There is no exclusive game but we can still cite Battle Unit Zeoth, Cool World and Darkman which only exist in ESP version in Europe.
